Learn more about hay fever and allergies

What is hay fever?

Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to airborne substances like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. It’s caused by the immune system overreacting to these otherwise harmless particles.

What are the signs and symptoms of hay fever?

Common symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, throat or ears, and watery, red eyes. Some people also experience headaches, sinus pressure, or postnasal drip.

How do I know if I have hay fever or a cold?

Colds are caused by bacteria or viruses and often include symptoms like a sore throat, fatigue, and body aches. Hay fever, on the other hand, doesn't cause a fever and tends to involve itchiness and watery eyes. If your symptoms come and go with specific triggers (like pollen or pet hair), it's more likely hay fever.

How can I get relief from hay fever?

Relief options include antihistamines, nasal sprays, and lifestyle strategies like keeping windows closed during high pollen periods. Some people also explore natural remedies or immune-supporting ingredients such as turmeric, quercetin, or Vitamin C to support the body's response during allergy season. Other hay fever treatments can include: injections, wipes, eye drops, prescription medications, local honey, and stinging nettles.

How long does hay fever last?

Hay fever can last for weeks or even months depending on the allergen. For example, tree pollen can trigger symptoms in spring, grass pollen in summer, and weed pollen in autumn.

When does hay fever season start and end?

The season varies by location and allergen, but generally runs from early spring (March) to late autumn (October) in many regions. Different types of pollen peak at different times.

Is hay fever worse at night

Yes, symptoms can feel worse at night due to pollen particles settling indoors, exposure to dust mites in bedding, or lying down, causing congestion. Keeping windows closed and using air purifiers or allergen-proof bedding may help.

How do seasonal allergies affect my skin?

Allergies can sometimes lead to skin sensitivity, including dryness, itchiness, or puffiness around the eyes. Rubbing the eyes or nose frequently can also contribute to skin irritation.

Can hay fever cause a rash?

While hay fever doesn’t typically cause a rash, some people with allergic tendencies may develop skin reactions such as hives or eczema-like symptoms, especially if they’re also allergic to certain foods or airborne triggers.
