Nerve

Magnesium ensures smooth and efficient nerve signal conduction, preventing misfiring and neurological issues by maintaining the electrical potential of cell membranes, allowing nerves to transmit signals effectively.

Muscle

Magnesium stabilises important ions such as calcium, potassium and sodium to support energy metabolism, reduce fatigue and regulate tissue contractions thus relaxing muscles.

Sleep

Magnesium regulates neurotransmitters in the brain associated with mental tension and our natural circadian rhythm.

Around 10-30% of the population has a magnesium deficiency.

Learn more about Magnesium

What is Magnesium good for?

Magnesium is a mineral that is essential for healthy muscles, nerves, bones, and blood sugar levels. If you don't get enough Magnesium in your diet over a long time, you may be at a higher risk of health problems such as migraine headaches, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis.

Magnesium deficiency symptoms

Insufficient intake of Magnesium-rich foods or those with inadequate diets can cause symptoms such as muscle spasms or tremors, weakness, general tiredness, vomiting or diarrhoea and abnormal heart rhythms. The prolonged use of specific medications, such as diuretics or anti-reflux prescriptions can also increase the risk of Magnesium deficiency. Additionally, high alcohol consumption is another factor that may lead to inadequate Magnesium levels in the body.

What are benefits of Magnesium supplements?

Magnesium is an essential macromineral needed by our bodies to support over 300 physiological processes. It will help with improving sleep quality and support restful sleep, support nerve and muscle health and alleviate muscle cramps. Magnesium is also beneficial for lifting mood and supports hormonal balance.

Magnesium side effects

While Magnesium supplements are generally considered safe, caution is warranted for individuals taking specific medications like diuretics and heart medications as Magnesium supplements may pose risks for them. Although most people do not experience side effects, high doses of Magnesium can lead to diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting. Those with kidney problems face a higher risk of adverse effects from Magnesium supplements.

Which Magnesium is best?

The best Magnesium form depends on your specific needs and preferences. Most Magnesium supplements are synthetic and manufactured from chemicals. These synthetic forms of Magnesium include; Magnesium picolinate, Magnesium (bis)glycinate, Magnesium taurate, Magnesium amino acid chelate, Magnesium citrate and Magnesium malate. Marine Magnesium from purified seawater is in the form of Magnesium hydroxide and is a natural and sustainable source of Magnesium that is highly absorbed by the body. Magnesium oxide and Magnesium carbonate can be made by heating Magnesium mineral deposits but are poorly absorbed into the tissues.

When should you take Magnesium?

The ideal time to take Magnesium can vary based on individual preferences and needs. Some people find it beneficial to take Magnesium in the evening to promote better sleep, as it can have a calming effect. Others prefer taking it with meals to enhance absorption.

Which Magnesium is best for sleep?

Marine Magnesium has a fast absorption profile and is more effective for reducing sleep problems and restless legs.

Which Magnesium is best for menopause?

All forms of Magnesium apart from Magnesium carbonate and Magnesium oxide can be used for menopausal symptoms. Consumers can choose between a natural source of magnesium such as Marine Magnesium or synthetic versions such as Magnesium glycinate, Magnesium picolinate, Magnesium amino acid chelate.

What is the best Magnesium to support low mood?

The best form of Magnesium for nervous system complaints generally is Marine Magnesium due to its fast absorption rate and broad spectrum of micronutrients which support a healthy nervous system and emotional balance.
